Characterized by thick luxurious white wool and minimalist black lines, the story behind Beni Ourain rugs is quite interesting. These rugs were used to cover the floors of the nomadic Beni Ourain tribes living in tents in the snow-capped Atlas Mountains where winter is particularly rough. These thick pile wool rugs were typically used as floor insulation, bedding, and blankets to keep warm during harsh winters. These tribes lived in remote mountainous locations in the northern Middle Atlas region, therefore, their art was not influenced by the Arab-eastern world, which explains why their style is so particular.

You now understand why Beni Ourain rugs are so comfy and dense. Walking on a Beni Ourain rug might be the comfiest feeling ever. They are made of 100% sheep wool that is undyed. They bring warmth and a beautiful feeling of comfort to any room of a house. They fit in lots of decor styles and they add so much comfort and texture.

The interest for beni Ourain rugs began a few decades ago in the early twentieth century under the French protectorate. Designers from all over the world began showing interest in these luxurious white minimalist rugs. Apparently, Frank Lloyd Wright himself was a big fan, I’ve read he made frequent trips to find rugs for his clients and had a Beni Ourain rug in almost every room of his Falling Water house. These black & white rugs might be trendy right now but they have the type of classic beauty that never goes out of style. In fact, they might seem to be increasingly popular in Canada and the US lately, but they’ve been praised by the French for quite some time.

Usually white or creamy off white, the Beni Ourain rugs are minimalist with their classic dark brown or black argyles. You can also find graphic symbols on some of them, they tell stories about birth, fertility, nature and femininity. In the weaver’s eye, (usually women) these signs are lucky charms and bring protection against evil spirits. Because of the traditional tent sizes, Beni Ourain used to be rather square sized rugs. Nowadays, you can have one made in a custom size. You could even choose the line designs and the thickness of the pile you’d like. One sad development about these Moroccan rugs is they are being knocked off by Turkish and Chinese factories a lot lately. If you want to make sure your rug is the real deal, look at the reverse side of the rug.If it’s a real Beni Ourain, the knotting should be irregular. Also, lots of sellers will tell you your rug really has been made by the original Beni Ourain tribe, while it is possible, it’s probably not true. Demand being really high, nowadays most Beni Ourain style carpets are made in organized women’s cooperatives, which is a good thing for the workers who are now paid decently for their work and they have good work conditions. They are still weaved with virgin wool and made by hand, rest assured. Only experts can see the difference, the main difference being that authentic Beni Ourain rugs are now considered antique rugs.

What I like the most about Moroccan rugs is the contrast between their handmade traditional nature and their super modern look in our contemporary homes. Here at Baba Souk, we especially love to mix them in contemporary decors. I feel they are at their best in an all white décor along with mid-century or modern furniture. We love the California style where modern meets quirky and traditional, we feel Moroccan rugs deserve the spotlight. For me, a Moroccan rug is a piece of art. Something you will cherish for a lifetime and as I always say: You don’t pick a Moroccan rug because it is practical or is the perfect size for your living room, you choose it because it makes your heart flip. I compare it to choosing a piece of art for your home. When you see the right one, you immediately know because your heart tells you.

If ever you need a specific size, please don’t hesitate to contact us, we can have one made specifically for you as we work directly with the artisans in Morocco.
