During my last visit to Marrakesh, I handpicked the most amazing Azilal rugs directly from the souk market. Azilal rugs are handmade using virgin wool by super- talented Berber women who come from a remote part of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Honestly, these rugs just blow my mind! Each and every piece I selected made me shriek with joy! It’s so unreal thinking they’ve been made by hand by women living in the mountains who learned the art though their mothers and grandmothers, yet Azilal rugs have such a contemporary look and the colors are so unusual that you could think of them as modern art! I’ve heard Berber women are truly inspired by nature and especially love to use playful, naïve colors to express their free spirit.
Each rug is one-of-a-kind and can be considered a collectible piece of art. It makes such a statement that you barely need anything else to decorate your room! I feel they are particularly cool in a living room or a master bedroom. They could make such a rad statement in your office as well! I’ve been seeing Azilal rugs in contemporary children’s rooms more and more recently and I think it’s such a fun idea for a kid’s decor!
